Rajoy puts corruption allegations aside to praise his government

Mariano Rajoy has been a controversial figure in recent weeks.

The Spanish Prime Minister has been the focus of accusations of political corruption, and calls for his resignation have been increasing in ferocity.

But today, before the Spanish leader meets with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi for a press conference, Rajoy spoke up in support of his government and his people.

Speaking at a news conference in Madrid, Rajoy was assertive in expressing his belief that since taking over from the Socialists his People’s Party government has taken significant steps forward and made a real impact on Spain’s budget deficit.

Rajoy stated: ‘Public deficit data for 2012 to be published in the coming weeks will show unprecedented fiscal consolidation efforts have been made.’

The notorious politician went on to state that the budget cuts he had implemented, in the face of the anger of his populace, were of ‘extraordinary merit’ and had shown that Spanish public finances were sustainable.

Soon enough budget data will reveal whether Rajoy is justified in his assertions, and show just how close the shortfall is to the Eurozone finance minister’s target of 6.3 per cent after five rounds of spending cuts and tax increases.

The nation’s central bank certainly appears to have its concerns. The Bank of Spain has already forecast that unless even more dramatic budget cuts are made Spain will miss its deficit goals, for both this year and next.

Considering the fact that Spain has missed every target since 2009 the Bank of Spain’s concerns do have prior grounding.

After speaking to lawmakers and reporters Rajoy will be joined by Mario Draghi this afternoon at his Madrid residence.
